How to remove a broken key
If part of your key is stuck in a lock, do not panic! There are several ways to remove a broken key without having to call a locksmith. The type of lock you are dealing with and how far the key is lodged will determine what works best.
Things you will need

Clean rags
Ice
Pliers, scissors or tweezers
Step 1
Return the barrel to the vertical position
Using a screwdriver (or a pair of pliers), turn the barrel of the lock, with the broken key, until it is vertical. You will not be able to remove the broken key from the lock from any position other than open or closed.
Alternatives include a pair of sharp scissors or even tweezers (but with caution!). You don’t want to push the broken key any further into the lock.
Step 2
Lubricate the lock
The next step, to remove a broken key, is to lubricate the lock. For this, take a can of WD-40 Multi-Use Product. Thanks to the smart straw, you can spray directly into the keyhole to help the key slide out more easily. Keep a clean rag to hand to catch any spills. Now, attempt to wiggle the broken key up and down (not side to side) to work it out of the lock.
Step 3
Ice is key
Finally, if the key refuses to wiggle free, you can try using ice to remove a broken key. The cold temperature of the ice makes the metal contract, allowing it to slide more easily from the lock.
Wrap a piece of ice in a paper towel, to prevent drips, and press it to the head of the key. Hold it down and wait for a few minutes. Then, attempt to remove the broken key again by jiggling it slightly, if necessary.
Step 4
Call in a professional
If none of this has worked, you may have a different problem that needs resolving. It’s important that you don’t make the problem worse and the best option, at this stage, would be to call on the professionals for assistance and avoid damaging the lock yourself.
Prevention is better than cure
To keep your lock in great working order going forward, clean it regularly. Locks are full of dirt or debris that has accumulated over time and if not cleaned, this can prevent it from working properly. Apply WD-40 Multi-Use Product to the key and keyhole and re-insert the key a few times to work it down into the lock. Remember, keep a clean rag handy to collect any drips.
