How to remove rust from keys
The passage of time, plus damp or humid conditions can cause the appearance of rust on objects around the home and garden, including keys. Here we explain how to remove rust from keys in four simple steps.
Things you will need
WD-40® Multi Use Product
White vinegar
Bristled brush
Assorted cloths or rags
Step 1
Rub with a damp cloth
To remove rust from keys, start by taking a damp cloth and rub the keys vigorously. In this way, you will remove any rust that is not embedded and make the following steps easier.
Step 2
Soak in a bowl of soapy water
The next step to remove rust from keys, is to prepare a mixture of soapy water in a bowl. Soak the keys in the bowl for about 10-15 minutes. Then, remove, rinse with a little clean water and dry with a cloth.
Step 3
Remove the rust with vinegar
In another container, pour enough vinegar so that the liquid covers the key and heat it for a few seconds in a microwave. Do not dilute the vinegar with water or it will not work as well.
Leave to act for about 3 hours, then remove the key from the bowl. Rinse with a little clean water, rub with a thick bristle brush to remove any final traces of rust, and finally dry with a cloth.
Step 4
Prevent rust from forming
Now that you know how to remove rust from keys, you should also know how to prevent it appearing again! Spray the keys with WD‑40® Multi-Use Product. This will protect against rust and corrosion in the future. Let the product act for a few minutes and remove the excess with a cloth.
